Sideboards and display cabinets are the most satisfying things I get to work on. They're big, solidly built and full of character, but the dark varnish they were originally sold with can make them feel heavy in a modern room.

Restoring one is a good deal more than repainting it. The piece is repaired and brought back to life first, then finished by hand, with the hardware kept or changed to suit. A mid-century display cabinet makes a lovely drinks cabinet, and a long sideboard works as well in a hallway as it does in a dining room.
